Every destination has attractions. Only a few become unforgettable.
Why?
It’s a question I’ve been asking for years while travelling and filming across Southern Africa.
Some places have spectacular scenery, fascinating history and warm hospitality, yet remain largely unknown. Others, often with fewer natural advantages, become places people dream of visiting.
The difference isn’t always money.
It isn’t always marketing.
And it certainly isn’t always luck.
I believe the answer lies somewhere much deeper.
A Different Question
Perhaps the most important question every destination should ask isn’t:
“How do we attract more visitors?”
Perhaps it should be:
“If visitors had to describe our destination to a friend in one sentence, what would we hope they would say?”
If the answer is unclear, the opportunity isn’t simply to improve marketing.
It’s to discover the story that already exists.
Because iconic destinations are rarely defined by what they have.
They are remembered because of what they mean.
